President’s update June/July 2022

It is with sadness that I acknowledge the passing of Margaret McAlister. Margaret was a member of the Club for over 53 years and served as Women’s Captain and a member of the Women’s Committee during that time and had a significant influence on women’s matters. She started the Glenelg/Grange Challenge and initiated the change that recognised women by their own name not that of their husbands. She was also Club Champion four times.

The women’s Sub Committee (WSC) have been very busy over the last couple of months. We have revisited our mission which is clearly focused on managing Women’s golf and social calendar each year, fostering and maintaining a welcoming and friendly environment for women members, promoting the Club’s core values as outlined in the current Strategic Plan and creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for our women members.

The Shotgun start day held in April was a very successful event. 105 players registered for 18 holes golf and lunch, and 16 for 9 holes.  The Use of yellow tees for the event was popular with players. Anna Meares OAM was a popular and inspirational speaker. Anna is an Australian retired track cyclist who needs little introduction to members of our club.  She is Australia’s first athlete to win individual medals in four consecutive Olympics.  She has been the world champion on four occasions, and a gold medallist at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Of note she is currently one of The Grange Golf Club’s female ambassadors.

An item for ongoing discussion is developing strategies for increasing the number of new women members. In May we were delighted to welcome two new members: Lesley Pamment and Marian Inverarity and in June Rosalie Kartut.  We sincerely hope they enjoy their membership of The Grange Golf Club. The WSC are working on developing Welcome Packs for new Women Members and are planning a drinks and nibbles event to welcome them in September.

Our Annual exchange with Royal Adelaide in June saw 76 of our women members play at Royal Adelaide and 54 Members from Royal Adelaide played at our course. A highlight for the Royal Adelaide members was a Hole in One on the 15th West.

The Pennant Season commenced in May and finished with mixed success.  Congratulations to the Sanderson Gup team in what was a repeat of last year’s final. The Grange Golf Club won the 2022 Sanderson Cup, defeating Glenelg 3.5-1.5 at Royal Adelaide. Another history making event.

I attended the Grange/Glenelg exchange on 26 July. Grange members enjoyed the challenging Glenelg Course and the delightful menu available for lunch.  We were delighted to welcome 68 Glenelg members who played on our West Course.

The annual Guest Day is planned for 9 August and already the Flyer in the Locker room is filling up.  Lunch will be held in the Member’s Lounge and the cost is $35 per person.

Plans for the Grange Woodlands Challenge are well underway, and we are looking forward to hosting their players at Grange in October.
