I’m pleased to report that Grange Seniors passed our first test of the season today with a strong 5-2 Win over Mt Osmond at West Lakes GC.
Three wins keeps Grange at the top of Division 2 but only 1 match ahead of Glenelg who also have three wins.
Mt Osmond, West Lakes and Aston Hills are in 3rd, 4th and 5th positions, all having won 1 of 3 contests. Forget the rest.
In today’s matches against Mt Osmond, Shane Amor led the Grange team out at No 7 and cruised to a 7/6 Win over Dirk Seret.
Michael Broadbent followed soon after with an equally strong 7/6 Win over Christopher Gill at No 4.
Mark Polden opened his season’s account at No 6, securing an excellent 6/4 Win over Andrew Murray. I saw Mark knock the flags out on a few holes; he played well.
There was a lull in proceedings with three matches being closely fought, so it was of great relief when news came of David Thompson’s 5/4 victory over Ashley Norton at No 3, securing the team win.
Things weren’t going right for Neil Laird at No 5 who was 4 down with 6 to play. He rallied strongly to get square with 2 to play but lost to Sam Robertson who played an exceptional approach from long range on the 18th to win 1 Up. Eric Lane had a topsy-turvy battle, gaining the upper hand early but eventually going down 3/2 to Fanis Katsarelias at No 2.
Peter Shaw, playing No 1, was last in and won the 18th to defeat Matthew Hodgson 1 Up, maintain his winning record and keep Grange at the top of the table.
So, a good result for Grange Seniors, especially since we thought Mt Osmond were the other likely challengers apart from Glenelg.
While it’s shaping up to be a two-horse race, it’s too early to write Mt Osmond off and I suspect they may call for reinforcements later in the season. And we can’t afford to slip.
Next week we take on Aston Hills at Mt Osmond. I suspect we will need a 6-1 or even 7-0 win to remain ahead of Glenelg, which is doable although surprises are possible around Mt Osmond.
