Grange Senior Pennant 2021 – Round 4 Report

More sandwiches, coffee and another tank of petrol as Grange Seniors headed to another point on the compass for Round 4 at Sandy Creek Golf Club.
We were greeted by  warm sunny weather, light winds and a course in excellent condition.

Sandy Creek has just one Greenkeeper, Steve Maddaford – a Grange Member, who is assisted by a bunch of volunteers.
Remarkably, the course is in excellent condition and the enormous greens are as good as some of the best in Adelaide.
Sure there’s a few rough patches but not many and overall the challenging layout is in pretty impressive condition. It is worth a visit just to see all the kangaroos and it’s in the Barossa, albeit near Gawler.

This week Grange was up against Aston Hills who were sitting 3rd on the ladder, one behind us, and who we assessed to be the main threat to our goal of meeting Kooyonga in the final.

That’s now not so clear as West Lakes have replaced them at 3rd the ladder after Grange Seniors dished out a 6-1 drubbing of Aston Hills at Sandy Creek today.
A strong result for Grange Seniors, consolidating 2nd position on the Table, with Grange and Kooyonga the only undefeated teams after Round 4.

Steve Wohling led us out at No 7 and took his match down the 18th but lost out to Alan Goodchild.

Shane McInerney defeated Russell Hewson with a strong 3/2 win at No 6. That’s three straight wins for Shane.
Solid but no Hero this week. In fact, at one stage I thought he was challenging for the ‘Explorer Award’ when I saw him thrashing away in knee-high rough down a gully, somewhere near Nuriootpa.

Mark Polden backed up his big win last week with another, thrashing Barry Davis 6/5 at No 5. That was enough to secure the ‘Bully Award’ this week, though there were others hot on his heels.
Mark just knocks it down the middle, finds it and puts it on the green with a minimum of fuss. Not flashy but he just wears his opponents out!

Peter Shaw continues to play strongly and secured a whopping 6/4 win over John Ridenour playing at No 4.
Peter now has four big margin wins on the trot, and is still eyeing ‘player of the year’ but that honour isn’t going to be handed over without a fight.
I suspect he’ll need to remain undefeated to claim it and at the moment he’s playing well enough to do so, and we need him to. Keep it going Pete!

Joe Borrelli was back in the side this week.
Didn’t get off to the best of seasons and was ‘spelled’, so he was keen but under some pressure to get back in the winner’s circle.
Joe scored a thumping 5/3 win over Dale Aitken playing at No 3.  ‘JB’s Back!’, which is where we need him to be as we run into the pointy end of the season. He dug deep – Great stuff Joe!

Eric (‘Elaine’) Lane played No 2, opened with a birdie and was never headed in his strong 5/3 win over Peter Stanley.
Peter tried his best to apply some pressure on Eric but couldn’t match Eric’s precision ball striking. Eric’s game is improving every week. He remains undefeated but trails Peter Shaw because he halved his first match.

Shane Amor had a solid 4/3 win at No 1 over Des Heffernan, who didn’t have a good day.
Shane won’t put his performance in the memory bank but he was never threatened and got the job done.

So, a strong 6-1 Win to Grange Seniors as we head into the pointy end of the season.

Next week is a big one when we take on Kooyonga in the last match of the Rounds, to be followed by a Semi, then the Final.
Kooyonga are next week’s favourites, despite the match being played at home on Grange West.
Grange is pretty solid and have the firepower to bring Kooyonga down but we’ll need to sharpen our games to prevail as I suspect no quarter will be given. It will likely be a pretty tight contest.

If you’re free next Monday, come out and support Grange Seniors. We tee-off the 1st on Grange West at 11.30 am
Love to see you there, making some noise!

In the other Divisions, TTG is undefeated in Division 1, with Royal Adelaide 2nd on the ladder. Mt Osmond and Flagstaff Hill are both undefeated and the top two in Division 3.
