RIP Peter Toogood

It was with much sadness we report the passing of Peter Toogood at the age of 89.

Peter was the son of Grange’s first resident Professional Alfred H. Toogood who was appointed in 1929. Peter was born here at The Grange in 1930 and became one of Australia’s greatest amateur golfers.

Peter’s achievements in his illustrious career included: Amateur Champion at The Open Championship in 1954, Australian Open Amateur Champion on 4 occasions, Tasmanian Open Champion on 8 occasions, New Zealand Amateur Champion in 1956 and member of the Australian team which won the Eisenhower Trophy in 1958. Peter carved his name in the Guinness Book of Records when at the tender age of eight he scored a hole in one on the eighth at Kingston Beach.

Member of the Golf Hall of Fame, Australian Sports Medal recipient in 2000, Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1980 and appointed Member of the Order of Australia in 2006.

We were fortunate enough to host Peter and his family at Grange in May 2017. We have attached some excerpts out of the Grange history book to give members more information on the background of the Toogood’s at Grange.

Peter is a big part of Grange’s history and will be sorely missed.
