Given that golf is the most played sport amongst an elderly population, a common question we get at GOLF+ is whether it is safe to resume playing golf following hip or knee joint replacements. Fortunately, the evidence is clear that resuming a high level of physical activity following knee replacement does not increase the risk of complications. In fact, when comparing those with a low physical activity level to a high physical activity level those who completed more exercise improved their life expectancy following surgery.

A recent study found that when comparing golfers and non-golfers who underwent a knee replacement, golfers tended to have better outcomes after surgery! Fortunately, the vast majority of golfers who have surgery get back to a level of golf that they are happy with.

A physiotherapist may consider several factors before recommending a return to golf which may include your pain, strength, walking endurance and flexibility. We know that there are positive benefits from walking following a lower limb surgery and golf may be useful in motivating patients to increase their exercise level again.

The GOLF+ physiotherapy team are highly experienced with dealing with people following joint replacements and will provide you with the flexibility and strength required to tackle the golf course again. This would likely include targeted exercises in the hope of getting you on course quicker or helping your golf swing. Another factor for improved recovery following joint replacement is pre-hab (pre surgery rehabilitation), it has been shown to improve post-surgery outcomes and accelerate return to full function. If you have any questions about an upcoming replacement, returning to golf after, or would like to get started on some pre-hab exercises simply book an appointment with Patrick or Paul at GOLF+ or ask us a question!
