This week we feature our new Vice President Max Bessell who has been a member at The Grange Golf Club for 29 years.

What sparked your interest in golf and when did you join The Grange Golf Club?

Started golf in my early 20s when I had to give up football due to an eye injury.  I used to live in the Barossa Valley and got to know Bronte Warner who had the Ford dealership in Tanunda.  As a result I got to know Grange and joined through Bronte’s nomination and Seconded by his father Mel Warner.

What is your favourite hole on the golf courses and the hole you just can’t seem to master?

15th East is my favourite hole because it can change a lot through tee and pin position.

Out of the other 35 (plus the 37th) my most challenged hole is probably the 3rd East given that it is Index 18.

What has been the highlight in your golfing journey to date?

Eagling a number of Par 4s.  East 4, West 7th and West 16th (twice).

What is your go to lunch order in the Bistro/Grilled @ Grange?

Schnitzel (of course).

What do you do with yourself outside the golf club?

I do a lot of different things but most is taken up with my Adjunct Associate Professor role at the University of Adelaide and also my aged mother and parents-in-law.

Dead or alive, who would you most like to meet?

Keith Richards

Favourite memory you have had at the golf club?

It’s a slightly negative memory – a number of times sitting on the edge of a hole on par 3 for a hole-in-one.  But never got one yet!

What’s the best score you have ever shot at Grange?

78 on the East.

What motivated you to join The Grange Golf Committee?

Throughout my professional career I have been on a number of committees/boards and really enjoyed the experience.  I just wanted to continue that interaction with a Club that has provided much enjoyment for me.  Sort of – returning the quid pro quo.

What do you love about The Grange Golf Club?

The ease of comradery.
