We are thrilled to announce that Millie Whinney has gone back to back and won the 2022 Tony Mazzone Trophy two years in a row.

The Tony Mazzone Trophy was created in 2018 and is awarded to the best and fairest junior member who has excelled in their performance on and off the golf course over the past 12 months.  The exquisite trophy was generously donated by Joe Borrelli and was presented at the annual IWS Grange Junior Foundation Day on Friday 18th March 2022.

Millie Whinney joined The Grange Golf Club in 2016 at the age of 12 and her golf has come a long way in the past 6 years.

In December last year Millie was recognised as South Australia’s best performed women’s amateur golfer – topping the State’s 2020/21 Order of Merit (OOM).  Millie was outstandingly consistent throughout the 2020/21 season, with four wins and three seconds from her thirteen starts.  Wins in the Flagstaff Hill, Kooyonga, Royal Adelaide and Glenelg Vardon events demonstrated the talented teenager’s ability to compete and dominate on the toughest courses in South Australia.  This was all while completing year 12 and Covid impacting on travel and the events calendar.

Already in 2022 she has won back-to-back Vardons at Kooyonga and Barossa Valley

She has recently played in the:

  • TPS Murray River
  • Vic Open
  • Played in her first Australian Master of the Amateurs where she won the Am-Am Challenge and finished T4th for the event
  • Tasmania Amateur Championship finishing 11th
  • During her time at Grange she has been a member of the Winning Grange Sanderson Cup Teams in 2018 and 2021

In addition to this Millie has been a member of the Winning Grange Sanderson Cup Teams in 2018 and 2021, become the Girls Junior Club Champion in 2017 and 2021 and the Women’s Club Champion in 2020 and 2021.

Now that school is finished her biggest focus will be on her golf. Hopefully with less restrictions she can travel and really get a good idea of where her game is at compared to others in the field.

Congratulations Millie – a deserving winner.
