It’s easy writing Match Reports when everything has gone well.
This week’s report has been harder to write. No discourse on travelling to points of the compass or cheery weather reports today but it’s not all bad news.

Round 5 was played on Grange West and was the last of the minor rounds before heading into next week’s Semi-Final.

Grange Seniors fronted Kooyonga who were on top of the ladder and showed why by defeating Grange 6-1, in a fairly solid display through the order.

Shane McInerney led us out at No 7, was 4 down against Geoff Kay at one stage and pulled back to 1 down but it wasn’t enough and he shook hands on 18.
Peter Shaw faced an in-form Richard Payne at No 4, was unable to keep his winning run going and was dispatched to the change rooms early.
Joe Borrelli grabbed an early lead but was taken down by David Fraterman with a few holes to go.
Shane Amor at No 1, also finished early when defeated by Bruce Lindner who was square with the card when it ended.
Neil Laird at No 2 took on Ken Parker in a very close contest. On the back nine, Ken found the form that won him last Saturday’s Kooyonga Monthly Medal to edge ahead slightly and win the match on the 17th.
Eric Lane also had a keenly contested match against Gary O’Loughlin at No 3 but Gary held him off to take the match on the 18th.

Mark Polden was our sole winner at No 6 beating Harry Moore 1 Up, saving some team pride in the process. That’s three straight wins for Mark who has found form at the right time. Great stuff.

So not our best effort or the result we were hoping for but we finished 2nd on the ladder and achieved our first objective which was to get a berth in the Semi-Final.
We can also take heart that 4 of our matches went down 17-18 so although Kooyonga won today, they’re not unbeatable and our quest to gain promotion is far from over.

Next week we take on West Lakes in the Semi-Final at Flagstaff Hill GC to earn a spot in the Final.
Kooyonga must also win their Semi-Final against Aston Hills to gain a berth.

Final Standings in Division 2 after the minor rounds are:

  1. Kooyonga
  2. The Grange
  3. West Lakes
  4. Aston Hills
  5. South Lakes
  6. Sandy Creek (to be relegated to Division 3 next year)

In Division 1, TTG, Royal Adelaide, Thaxted Park and Blackwood round out the top four, and will compete in their Semi Finals next week. Glenelg finished 6th and will be relegated to Division 2 next year.

On behalf of the Senior Pennant Team, I would like to thank Simon Andrew (Grange Golf Ops Manager) for excellent coordination of the event, Grange Pro Shop Staff for looking after the players and post-match scoring, Rowan Daymond and the Greenskeeping Team for the great condition and fair setup of the course, the Bar and Catering Staff, and Club Captain John Thomas for acting as the Rules Official and Starter for the day. Grange’s efforts were noted by visitor teams, from whom I received many positive comments. Thanks also to Joe Borrelli for co-sponsoring post-match Bar Snacks for the teams.

Stay Tuned.
