Sam Masters joined The Grange Golf Club as a Junior member in 2003 and was a member for 14 years before starting his PGA Trainee Program at Regency in 2017. During his time as a member he represented the Club in Simpson Cup and was selected in the SA State Team. After completing his traineeship Sam came back to The Grange in a coaching role and now looks after our school holiday clinics, the McMillian Shield and Div 2 Junior Team as well as doing individual/private lessons and working in the Pro Shop. We would like to take this opportunity to share some more information on Sam to members.
What attracted you to work at The Grange Golf Club?
I joined Grange as a junior member and played a lot of my amateur career representing Grange in Simpson Cup and Vardon’s over 10+ years, so it was a great opportunity to work in a Club where I had so many great memories and met a lot of great people.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
The look on people’s faces when they start to figure out the golf swing. I teach plenty of beginners and there is nothing better than seeing that smile when they smash a drive or hole a long putt for the first time.
Least enjoyable?
Cleaning out peoples messes in the golf carts 👎 !!!
What is your favourite hole on the course?
There are so many great holes but my favourite would have to be the 14th East. Blind sharp dogleg left with very little room for error if you want to be aggressive on your tee shot. Play too safe off the tee though and you have got a long difficult shot to a tricky, well-guarded green.
Where was your favourite holiday?
I have to say Penang, Malaysia for my wedding! My father in laws side of the family are all Malaysian Indians and we did the whole traditional Indian wedding. Was an incredible experience to take in all the culture over there. Also probably the best food I have ever eaten!
Describe yourself in 3 words
Golf Swing Expert
Worst ever job?
I worked in a Bottle Shop drive through years ago and certainly saw some “interesting” characters.
Dead or Alive who would you like to meet?
Jack Nicklaus – the greatest to ever play our game and would be interesting to pick his brain about his life and golf career.
If you weren’t doing this job, what job would it be?
I have been around the golf industry all my life – my dad was a golf professional and taught me everything I know about playing and coaching the game. I really don’t know much else! Having said that I think it would be something in Information Technology – software development or game design. Something nerdy like that!
