{"id":26946,"date":"2022-11-24T10:45:03","date_gmt":"2022-11-24T00:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/?p=26946"},"modified":"2023-06-20T16:44:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T07:14:37","slug":"the-2022-coopers-cup-contest-royal-canberra-v-grange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/2022\/11\/the-2022-coopers-cup-contest-royal-canberra-v-grange\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2022 Coopers Cup Contest &#8211; Royal Canberra V Grange"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Combined-Teams-Crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26947 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Combined-Teams-Crop-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Combined-Teams-Crop-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Combined-Teams-Crop-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Combined-Teams-Crop.jpg 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After a two-year hiatus due to Covid,<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>the 11<sup>th<\/sup> annual men\u2019s Grange\/Royal Canberra reciprocal visit and interclub challenge for The Coopers Cup occurred over 18<sup>th<\/sup>-20<sup>th<\/sup> November at The Grange Golf Club.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Teams of twelve from each club battled against each other over 3 days of handicap match play consisting of foursomes on Day 1,<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>four-ball better-ball on Day 2 and individual on the last day.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is the usual \u201cRyder Cup\u201d format with a total of 24 points up for grabs.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The weather was tough all weekend with strong, gusty wind and cold rain squalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Royal Canberra team was Vice-Captain Russell Ingram, David McGilvary, Jack Libbis, Shane Radnell, Iain Davidson, Shane Harman, Tim Pickering, Mac Howell, Kerry Clarke, Dennis O\u2019Connor, Bill Walker and Peter Crawford.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Grange team was Captain John Thomas, Vice-Captain Kym Linke, Bruno Battistella, David Lang, Rick Kinnear, Alan Martin, Malcolm Coleman, Grant Dawkins, Marty Ingham, Jack White, Geoff Casson, and Geoff Webber.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Royal Canberra were the holders of the Coopers Cup and Vice-Captain Russell hand-carried the beautiful piece of silverware to The Grange for the contest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The teams assembled at The Grange at midday on Friday for a sandwich lunch, foursomes pairings selection and the chance to meet new team members and catch up with our friends and sparring partners from earlier contests.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>After lunch the six foursomes matches got underway on the East course.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the results started to come in it was apparent that The Grange team was not capitalising on the home course advantage. At the end of the day The Grange was up 3<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd<\/span> to 2<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd <\/span>points and it was time to reflect on the performance over a gourmet barbecue and a few drinks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On Day 2 there were six 4BBB matches and play was on the West course.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Grange team was hoping for a stronger performance.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Royal Canberra must have got a rev-up from Vice-Captain Russell because they came to play and kept the pressure on.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The result for the day was 3 matches each and, at the end of Day 2 the overall scores saw The Grange up 6<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd<\/span> to 5<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd points \u2013 a dangerously slender lead!<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Coopers-Cup-crop-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26950 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Coopers-Cup-crop-1-281x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Coopers-Cup-crop-1-281x300.jpg 281w, https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Coopers-Cup-crop-1.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Day 3 and, after a sleepless night, The Grange Captain assembled the team brains trust to discuss our selections to win the minimum 6 of 12 matches needed to regain the Coopers Cup. The Canberra team arrived with a quiet determination and were clearly focussed on humbling The Grange on their home course.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The individual matches got underway on the East course and it was an arm wrestle.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>With 8 matches in, Royal Canberra had 5 wins and The Grange 3. The next 2 matches saw The Grange with a win and a half, so now it was 5<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd<\/span> to 4<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd<\/span> to Royal Canberra.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Results from the last 2 matches came in \u2013 solid wins to Geoff Webber and Marty Ingham!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Grange won the day 6<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd<\/span> to 5<span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">\u00bd<\/span> and, overall, 13 to 11 to regain the Coopers Cup!<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Hall-of-Famers-Crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26949 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Hall-of-Famers-Crop-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Hall-of-Famers-Crop-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Hall-of-Famers-Crop-768x459.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Hall-of-Famers-Crop.jpg 1008w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The presentation dinner on Sunday night got underway with The Grange President, Nicolle Rantanen-Reynolds, giving our visitors a warm welcome.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>An evening of sumptuous food, nice wine and much revelry followed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Coleman-Howell trophy for the best individual performance was presented to Geoff Webber, who won all his matches by significant margins.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>During the evening The Grange \u2013 Royal Canberra Hall of Fame was established with the initial inductees being Mac Howell and Dennis O\u2019Connor from Royal Canberra and, Malcolm Coleman and Allan Martin from The Grange.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, the highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Coopers Cup to The Grange Golf Club!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Grange courses were in wonderful condition, and I thank our ha<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Geoff-Webber-Player-of-Series-Crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26951 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Geoff-Webber-Player-of-Series-Crop-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Geoff-Webber-Player-of-Series-Crop-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Geoff-Webber-Player-of-Series-Crop-768x424.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.grangegolf.com.au\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Geoff-Webber-Player-of-Series-Crop.jpg 977w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>rd-working green staff for that.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Also, our hospitality staff did a splendid job keeping us supplied with food and beverage.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I thank my Grange team mates for their efforts and support during the event and our friends from the Royal Canberra Golf Club for a wonderful weekend of golf.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I particularly want to thank Royal Canberra Vice-Captain Russell Ingram for his warm company and friendship.
