Linke

What sparked your interest in golf and when did you join The Grange Golf Club?

My parents played golf and most Sundays were spent at the Balaklava Golf Club enjoying the company of other families. Eventually I started to hit balls and play and caddie for my father, so have been involved for most of my life and enjoy the game and friendships.

I joined The Grange in 1989, having had my name on the waiting list for about 9 or 10 years. Previously I have been a member at Balaklava, Gawler, Millicent, Naracoorte and Flagstaff Hill Golf Clubs.

What is your favourite hole on the golf courses and the hole you just can’t seem to master?

My favourite hole is the 17th East. I like the challenge of the carry and aiming at the bunker and also the way it plays as a very long hole from the alternate tee. I find the 6th West to be a difficult hole, especially if you don’t find the fairway with your drive, and even if you do it is a long second shot to the green guarded by the two bunkers.

What has been the highlight in your golfing journey to date?

In 2009 Cathy and I took a week off work to go the Australian Masters at Kingston Heath to watch Tiger Woods play. It was a great week and we met lots of interesting people, including sitting in the stands and chatting with former Australian wicket keeper Ian Healy and walking the back nine of the course with Nick Cullen and his group as they were one of the last groups out on the Friday afternoon.

What is your go to lunch order in the Bistro/Grilled @ Grange?

Bruschetta

What do you do with yourself outside the golf club?

When I first retired I spent a number of years working part time writing and editing materials for the Australian Curriculum Authority and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. Now, I spend a lot of time with family. I also enjoy trips interstate to watch and play golf and travel to Melbourne for AFL matches. I am also a keen reader and do plenty of walking to try and stay fit.

Dead or alive, who would you most like to meet?

I think I would like to meet all of my grandparents again. There are lots of questions I would like to have answered about the family that I never thought of when I was younger and they were still alive.

Favourite memory you have had at the golf club?

Having the Women’s Australian Open has been the absolute highlight. I enjoyed being involved as a volunteer, having the opportunity to play in the pro-ams and then being able to watch world class golfers.

What’s the best score you have ever shot at Grange?

I have had a 77 on the West Course and a 76 on the East Course.

What motivated you to join The Grange Golf Committee?

A number of years ago I managed golf for secondary school students at Regency Park Golf Course and enjoyed doing that. Following on I believe it is the idea of trying to give back or support the Club, given the many years that I have been a member enjoying the facilities and the work of others.

What do you love about The Grange Golf Club?

Mainly the fact that over the years we have enjoyed playing as a family. Then there are the two courses and the way they are consistently presented to a high standard, thank you Rowan and greens staff, and the friendly members and getting to know a little about their many and varied backgrounds while playing golf.

The second edition of our website and E News
